Prouvé Cité Armchair
|
Eileen Gray Adjustable Table E1027 |
AKA Chair
|
| Favored
among collectors, it exhibits a certain static
dynamism with its low build and angled
backrest. A resilient fabric sling seat is stretched over the chair’s
tubular steel frame to produce a hammock effect, following the contours
and movement of the body for constant support. |
Eileen Gray was born in Ireland in 1878, studied at
the Slade School of Art in London and then moved to Paris. After her
work was exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Décorateurs in 1913, she
started earning commissions for her interior design work, and in 1922,
she opened her own shop, called Jean Désert. In mid-career, Gray became
an architect and designed a home in Roquebrune, France with
fellow-architect and partner Jean Badovici. In photographs of the house,
the Adjustable Table E1027 (1927) is shown being used next to a bed, but
it is also wonderfully suited for use next to a sofa or chair. |
French designer Jean-Marie Massaud is only 44 years old, and yet he
is already world renown for his furniture, industrial design and
clothing projects, as well as for his work in architecture and brand
development. In designing his AKA (also known as a chair, 2010), Massaud
took a hybrid approach to the materials, combining a light and
comfortable body with four strong oak legs. “It reveals a tough
character without losing its image of lightness,” said the designer.

functional and aesthetic impact |
Le Corbusier Collection of Modern French Furniture
Le Corbusier collection of modern
furniture is minimalist but elegantly comfortable. Few would protest that Le
Corbusier, Charles Edouard Jenneret, is one of the most influential architects
of the 20th century. He articulated provocative ideas, created revolutionary
designs and demonstrated a strong, if utopian, sense of purpose — to meet the
needs of a democratic society dominated by the machine.
Charlotte Perriand is best remembered for her elegant modernist tubular steel
furniture of the 1920's and 1930's. In addition to Le Corbusier, Perriand also
collaborated with sculptor Fernand Leger and architect Jean Prouvé. She is one
of the most remarkable figures in the development of modernist design. The
Le Corbusier group referred to their LC2 and LC3 collections (1928) as “cushion
baskets,” which they designed as a modernist response to the traditional club
chair. These pieces reverse the standard structures of sofas and chairs by
having frames that are externalized.
The differences among the collections are that the LC2 is more compactly scaled,
and the LC3 has the option of down-wrapped cushions that create a softer look
and feel.

| LC3 Grand Modele Three-Seat Sofa with Down Cushions |
LC3 Grand Modele Two-Seat Sofa |
| With thick, resilient pillows resting within the steel
frames, the idea was to offer all the comfort of a padded surface while
applying the elegant minimalism and industrial rationale of the
International Style. The color-saturated frames and fabrics were chosen
from the color palettes or “color keyboards” that Le Corbusier developed
in the 1930s and 1950s. Each color was chosen for its spatial and
physiological effects, and Corbu’s palettes allow each hue to match the
others –go ahead and pair any fabric with any frame |

LC10 Rectangular Low Table
LC10 Square Low Table
|
LC1 Sling Chair
|
| Expressing the rationalist aesthetic that came to epitomize the
International Style, the framework of the LC10 Rectangular Low Table
(1928) is reduced to a minimum. It was Perriand’s idea to manufacture
the legs and side pieces separately to ensure the highest quality
finish; in this fashion, components of various sizes can be used to
create tables more in line with demand today. |
Le Corbusier regarded traditional furnishings, with their structures
hidden beneath wads of padding and upholstery, as relics of the past.
Partnering with Charlotte Perriand and his cousin Pierre Jeanneret, Le
Corbusier stripped away all excess to create the sleek, elemental LC1
Chair (1928). |

Victoria Ghost Side Chair

Louis Ghost Armchair
|
| Philippe Starck's Victoria Ghost Chair (2006), like her cousin the
Louis Ghost, presented a significant manufacturing challenge for Kartell.

Who else but Philippe Starck would dare mess with a king?
Reinventing the classic Louis XVI armchair for Kartell, the playful
Louis Ghost Armchair (2002) is a postmodern triumph of technical
innovation and historical style. |
Leave it to designer Philippe Starck to find inspiration in the
furniture of Versailles when creating a chair for a Chinese restaurant in Paris.
The Kong Chair (2002) is hand crafted in Pennsylvania using the same 77-step
process that Emeco first developed for its Navy Chair.
"When I close my eyes, this is the chair I see," said Philippe
Starck of his Icon Chair (2006), designed for Emeco. Like all Emeco seating, the
Icon is handcrafted in a 77-step patented construction process that includes
heat treatment and anodizing

When asked about the collaboration, Starck replied, "Working with
Emeco has allowed me to use a recycled material and transform it into
something that never needs to be discarded - a tireless and unbreakable
chair to enjoy for a lifetime. It is a chair you never own, you just use
it for a while until it is the next person's turn." |
