Palace of Versailles in Île-de-France
Although it started as the
simple hunting lodge of Louis XIII
(1623), it was enlarged and decorated during the reign of Louis
XIV by Le Nôtre, gardener; Le Vau, architect; and Le Brun, painter;
until it took on the shape we know today and became the royal residence. Louis
XV and Louis XVI
added their own influence to the decoration. After the Revolution,
Versailles was made a historical museum. The interiors are being restored with
fabrics woven to the same specifications as the originals and furniture is being
reacquired as it becomes available.
